Pressure hero2

Customer story: Airways

Airways (external link)is New Zealand’s air navigation service provider. Every year, it manages more than 500,000 domestic and international flights through one of the world’s largest airspace regions; an area of approximately 30 million square kilometres.

Here at MSL, we calibrate several primary reference standards for the Airways calibration lab in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, and we’ve worked closely with them since 2013. Our expertise in mass, pressure, and length all help to keep planes flying safely through this vast airspace, as Taylor Elley - Maintenance Manager National Support, Airways – explains:

“Our reference pressure standards are calibrated by MSL. We then use those standards to calibrate our barometers that are at all of the aerodromes around the country. These barometers are then used to validate the reference pressure of the day before it is passed on to every aircraft in the area. This ensures that every aircraft has their altimeter set correctly and can confidently know what height they are at, and that everybody is basing their height off the same reference level, allowing aircraft to confidently fly over each other.”

“The relationship we have with MSL allows us to have confidence that we're providing accurate information to aircraft, and that the information we're receiving from the aircraft is accurate and consistent across the country.”

Our services include calibrating a range of instruments used for measuring pressure; these include, deadweight testers, gauges and electronic transducers, barometers and manometers.
