Tom began at MSL early in 2008 after the completion of his MSc.  His BScTech honours degree majored in Electronics and Instrumentation which contained a healthy dose of physics, computer science and electronics.  He followed this up with his masters thesis, also completed at Victoria University and in conjunction with Magritek Ltd (manufacturer of novel NMR instruments and software). The thesis showed that a High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnet could enhance the signal to noise ratio of a one-sided Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) probe.

Since joining MSL Tom has been working extensively with MSL’s mains energy standard, including its maintenance, calibration and use for commercial calibration of industry energy meters.  More recently he has delved into understanding MSL’s impedance standards which are used for the calibration of standard capacitors and inductors.

Having spent a few years living and travelling before starting his studies, Tom brings a bit of experience from outside of science to his current position.
